Williams, who has played for the Giants in two spells, takes control with immediate effect for his first head coaching role following the departure of Jeff Jones.

“We feel it’s a natural progression for Yorick to be the Giants’ new head coach. He has over 600 professional games under his belt, has won many basketball titles and he has worked with many great coaches.

“Yorick is a proud Mancunian and he can see the longer term vision for Manchester Giants, not just for the professional team but for the rapidly-expanding community projects across Greater Manchester.

“We are delighted to have Yorick on board.”

Williams started his professional playing career with the Giants in 1994 and returned to the club for the 2013-14 season. He has played for a host of BBL clubs.

“The Giants have done some great work in the last three years and I want to build on that,” said Williams.

Giants legend Jones stepped aside from the role of head coach on Monday.

The move will allow him to focus on his post with Manchester City Council, overseeing Manchester’s new National Basketball Centre, as well as his directorships of Basketball England and the British Basketball Federation.
