20 years ago, the BBC created a truly magnificent radio station to cover and celebrate the Manchester Commonwealth Games. The station was led by Tim Pemberton now Head of Religion at the BBC. In a wonderful party to celebrate the 20th Anniversary, many of these individuals got together to party. These are a selection of the photos of that glorious day!


Back in 2002, Manchester hosted the fabulous Commonwealth Games. And what a Joy it was! On the 10th Anniversary of the Games some of the Volunteers, Management Team and others got together in Castlefield to celebrate. This year, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary Chief Executive Frances Done moved the celebration to One Manchester and I was invited to host the event and as official Photographer. This is a small collection of photos from the wonderful event!


Well after 20 years almost to the day, I have done my final show for BBC Radio Manchester and what a different world we were in 20 years ago? Manchester had just hosted the wonderful Commonwealth Games and we were all buzzing.


Today March 4th, marks the 20th Anniversary of the launch of 2002 Commonwealth Games Radio. This is part of the story on mikeshaft.com. I am moving it up to the front page.


Back in 2002 BBC Commonwealth Games Radio took to the airwaves to celebrate the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Recently a few of the staff got together at Media City for a catch-up. It was a truly joyous event.


The Commonwealth Games began life as the British Empire Games back in 1930, becoming the British Empire and Commonwealth Games for the 5th Games in Vancouver, Canada.


I suppose I would have to go back to 1993 when I first got involved with the Commonwealth Games. I think that was the year I applied to the Commonwealth Relations Trust for a Bursary to attend the Games in Victoria BC.


12 years ago Manchester hosted the 17th Commonwealth Games. Now as Glasgow 2014 invites the world to the party, BBC Radio Manchester used today the 28/07/2014 to celebrate the Games being in Glasgow and to look back at the joy that was spread back in Manchester 2002.


Back in 2002, I had the great pleasure of looking after the music on Commonwealth Games Radio. The music was to be mainly black music with a sprinkling of great classic songs from other genres.
