Demond Watt

mikeshaft.com MVP

As usual, for the whole of the season I have been following the exploits of all of the top players in the BBL with a view to picking out the top player for our MVP Award.

And what a season it has been.

I am sure you will have you own personal MVP but from Day 1, one name has stood out above all the rest and that is Demond Watt of the Cheshire Phoenix.

He has been outstanding and it is for that reason that he is the mikeshaft.com MVP for the 2014/15 Season.

Fab Flournoy

mikeshaft.com Coach of the Year

Well the Coach of the Year is another easy call to make this year. Fab Flournoy has led his Newcastle Eagles to two trophies so far.

At the time of writing, they are in the box seat for a third and the possibility of a clean sweep is still on the cards.

Fab has achieved all of this while playing as well. A recent injury has seen him take up his coaching role full time. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Having commentated on Basketball England D1 for a number of years, the elevation of the Bristol Flyers to the BBL was no surprise to me. What was a surprise was the job that they did at the top level of British Basketball.

It has been an absolute joy to see them secure some massive wins, and scare the pants off some other teams.

At the time of writing, the Flyers are in a monumental struggle with the Manchester Giants for the final place in the 2014/15 Play-Offs. Whether they are successful in that quest or not, the Bristol Flyers have been THE success story of the 2014/15 BBL Season.

Fab Flournoy

Special Award for services to Basketball

FAB 960

The mikeshaft.com Award for services to British Basketall goes to Fab Flournoy, Head Coach at the Newcastle Eagles.

It might seem odd to give this award to Fab having made him the Coach of the Year.

But it is not odd to me.

Fab is so much more than a coach, He is a player of many years standing, having made his debut back in 1999 at the Birmingham Bullets.

His achievements would seem to be endless – trophies, win percentage, games played, rebounds ripped down, steals etc. Fab is right up there with the best ever.

But, perhaps above all of that is the job that Fab does as an ambassador for the game.

He leads with dignity and joy and it is my pleasure to give him this award.
