ROCKS, LIONS & SHARKS WIN BUT PHOENIX DISAPPOINT IN BBL TV GAME

London Lions lived up to expectations in their first home game of the 2014-15 season with a 76-68 defeat of the previously unbeaten Bristol Flyers.

The capital club were still without marquee summer signings Zaire Taylor and Lovell Cook but it was another new face, Drew Sullivan and a returning favourite, Rod Brown, who came up with the goods at the Copper Box on Friday.

Great Britain captain Sullivan began to take control of the game in the second quarter and would finish with a team-high 18 points. This helped his team recover from a slow start to build 12-point lead but they were pegged back to within five points inside the final two minutes.

Brown then stepped up to knock down a big three-pointer to ice the victory to give Lions their second success of the season, and hand BBL rookies Bristol their first defeat, following two wins from the opening weekend.

Worcester Wolves also improved to 2-0 as they held off Cheshire Phoenix 83-67 to build on their win at reigning champions Newcastle Eagles.

Sheffield Sharks bounced back from a defeat at Manchester Giants with a 75-55 triumph over Plymouth Raiders.

And Leeds Force’s first BBL home game was spoiled by Glasgow Rocks, who recorded their first win of the season 77-57.

SURREY TAKE MONSTER WIN OVER ROCKS

Playing without the injured American big man Paul Egwuonwu, Rocks found it difficult to stop Surrey from scoring inside the paint. Despite solid long-range shooting, the Glasgow club found itself chasing the hosts for the majority of the first half.

Kramer KnutsonUnited’s inside production allowed the home side to establish a 46-39 halftime lead, after finishing the second quarter on a 6-0 run. Kramer Knutson provided the hosts with a lethal presence inside the box, finishing the game with a huge double-double of 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Elvisi Dusha’s basket midway through the third period put Surrey up by double figures for the first time in the game at 62-51, forcing Rocks’ player-coach Sterling Davis to call a timeout in an attempt to regroup.However, playing on the second end of a back-to-back, the Scottish side saw United pull away even further.

Kirk Crecco capped a great third quarter for Surrey with a basket to extend the hosts’ lead to 72-56 just before the buzzer.Visibly exhausted, Rocks ran out of gas in the second half and couldn’t put up a fight in the final frame, as United cruised to its first win of the new BBL Championship campaign. Like Glasgow, Surrey hold a 1-2 record three games into the season.

MANCHESTER GIANTS TAKE DOWN WORCESTER WOLVES

Newcastle Eagles player-coach Fab Flournoy celebrated reaching 4,000 career points in the BBL with a 100-73 victory at Durham Wildcats on Sunday – Eagles’ first win of the season.

The reigning champions showed their class in the third quarter after Flournoy hit the milestone with a second-quarter field goal.

The visitors closed the third period on a game-changing 19-2 run that started with Darius Defoe’s three-point play, and finished with back-to-back triples from Charles Smith and Stuart Thomson.

Defoe finished with 27 as Eagles bounced back from their opening night loss to to title rivals Worcester Wolves.

Wolves slipped to a first defeat of the season on Sunday as Manchester Giants continued their fine form with a 93-83 success at Lucozade Powerleague Trafford Sportsdome.

Giants looked like failing to repeat the heroics of last week’s win against Sheffield Sharks when they fell 28-16 behind.

But they hit back, inspired by three quick three-pointers from David Watts, and overwhelmed Wolves with their scoring. Watts went on to connect on six of his eight attempts from long rang as he finished with 19 points while Ben Eaves added 18 from the inside.

In Sunday’s other game, Cheshire Phoenix grabbed their first win of the season, a 66-48 at the expense of BBL rookies Leeds Force, whose search for a maiden success goes on.
