Mike Shaft Top 7 Awards for the 2013/14 Season
- Comments: None
Well for the whole of the 2013/14 season I have been following the exploits of all of the top players in the BBL with a view to picking out the top player for our MVP Award. Well the bottom line is this. This season there have been three outstanding players in the BBL and no matter how I try I am unable to separate them. So for the first time EVER in the mikeshaft.com Awards we have a three-way tie. The winners are:-
And if we thought the MVP was impossible to call it has to be said that the Coach of the Year was not much easier. So far we have had three different winners of Silverware and some stunning performances by teams at both ends of the table. In the end the winner was Paul James of the Worcester Wolves who won the BBL Trophy and who have been in the top three for most of the season. Paul also masterminded the move by the Wolves into their fabulous new arena. Congratulations to Paul James.
Our Team of the Year is the Newcastle Eagles who, this season, have got back to Championship winning ways under Head Coach Fab Flournoy. Once again Fab has masterminded a Championship win in the face of strong competition from The Wolves and the Sharks. Among it all, the Eagles stood tall!

After getting in financial difficulties last season, the Cheshire Jets were taken over and relaunched as The Cheshire Phoenix under the Chairmanship of Andrew Donaldson.
After a slow start on the results front, Head coach John Lavery made a number of changes to the roster and the team has gone from strength to strength.
Meanwhile the Manchester Giants, who also had a poor start to the season, suddenly came alive as the season progressed. It is impossible to put a finger on why it changed but suddenly the Giants were beating every team in sight.
At the moment of writing they are in 7th position in the BBL League table. Congratulations must go to Head Coach Jeff Jones and all concerned with the Giant’s Organisation.
Without doubt, these two teams have been the success stories of the 2013/14 season.
The mikeshaft.com Award for services to British Basketall goes to Mike Burton, Assistant Coach at the Cheshire Phoenix. When the ‘NIX’ were relaunched, Mike Burton was once again called upon to help get the club on firm footings.
Mike Burton is a legend of the British Game having clocked up about 35 years in Schools Basketball and about 26 years in the Pro Game. It is a great pleasure to make this Award to him in the 2013/14 season.
