Sheffield born Nick Matthew has been playing Squash from an early age and the now 33 year old came to the attention of the Squash world when he won the British Junior Open Under 19s.
Nick turned pro in 1998 and by June 2010 he was ranked as World Number 1.
On Sunday the 3rd of November 2013, he won his 3rd PSA World Open at the Central Arena in Manchester after a titanic battle with France’s Gregory Gaultier.
Matthew has now won 3 British Open titles in 2006, 2009, and 2012. And also holds three World Open titles, running out winner in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He also won a number of Gold, Silver and bronz medals in the World Team Championships, The Commonwealth Games and the World Games.
Following his recent victory in manchester Matthew said, “The atmosphere was immense, easily the best I’ve played in. I’ve faced Ramy in the middle east, Gregory in France but in terms of my favourite, today’s crowd was the best.”
He continued, “At my age, you have to prepare for the battles you want to take on. I’ve got no chance of becoming the number one seed, for that you would have to win every tournament going, which at my age is next to impossible, so I’ve decided to prepare for this and the Commonwealth Games [Glasgow 2014] which is another top priority”.
Yuri Matischen of the Sharks said, “It will be fantastic to welcome triple Senior Men’s World Squash Champion, Nick Matthew to the Sharks cup quarter-final this Friday. Nick is Sheffield through and through and must be one of the most successful ever sportsmen from our City!”
Continued Yuri, “The Sharks are keen to honour his achievements on Friday and make him our guest of honour! He’ll be here with the World Cup he won earlier this month.”
Head Coach Atiba Lyons says, “Nick Matthews three-times World Squash Champion has to be one of the City’s finest sportsmen. Having him on court on Friday will help raise our Game and I look forward to meeting him!”
Sharks fans will be able to buy signed copies of his new book Sweating Blood: My Life In Squash – The Official Nick Matthew Autobiography. Fans will also be able to have a photo taken with the World Championship Trophy.
