In the first of the afternoon’s five games, Heat managed to hold off a late fight back by Raiders, needing overtime to secure a 101-99 victory. Heat led for by as many as 16 points before Raiders went on a 29-15 run in the third quarter to force a thrilling conclusion. They led 89-88 with 38 seconds left. Chavis Holmes missed a pair of free throws for Heat, before Jamal Williams did the same for Raiders. Then, in the closing moments, Travis Holmes split a pair of free throws to force overtime.
Heat took a 6 point lead early in overtime, but Heat cut that down to 101-99 with 14 seconds to play and had the chance to win or tie the game with the final shot. However both Colin O’Reilly and Michael Ojo would miss three point shots, and Heat were the winners.
Travis Holmes led Heat with 27 points, 6 assists and 5 steals, assisted by Peter Simek’s 20 points from 10/14 field goal attempts and 13 rebounds. Michael Ojo led Raiders with 29 points and 5 assists.
Heat would have finished third if Glasgow Rocks had lost to Mersey Tigers later in the day and that looked a possibility after Tigers started the game strongly racing out into an 11-4 lead. It wasn’t to last long.
Rocks out-scored them 19-1 through the rest of the quarter and went on a 30-4 tear to go ahead 34-15 mid-way through the second period and they never looked back as they secured a 90-57 win.
Gareth Murray led the Rocks with 18 points and 8 rebounds, supported by Andrew Wedemire led the Rocks with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Jonny Bunyan made 4/5 3-point attempts and 4/4 free throws to finish with 16 points. Brice Fantazia had 9 assists.
For Tigers, Nathan Schall led their scorers with 15 points. Chris Bigley scored 14 points and pulled down 8 boards.
Elsewhere, Manchester Giants sealed ninth spot with a 114-92 win over Durham Wildcats. A close first half had finished 114-92 but Giants dominated the second half, going on a 22-7 run and outscoring Wildcats 63-42 in the half.
Wildcats finished tenth in the table as Cheshire Phoenix couldn’t claim the victory that would have given them tenth place, losing 85-72 to One Health Sharks Sheffield in the final game of the season. In the second period, Sharks forced Phoenix into missing 10 field goal attempts in a row as they built up a 18-3 run and took a 33-20 lead. Jerome Gumbs scored 12 of Cheshire’s points in a 19-8 third quarter that brought them back into the game and left them trailing by just 4 points with 4 minutes to play.
However, Sharks then produced a great shooting display, making all six of their final shots, while allowing Phoenix to only connect on a single field goal. That allowed them to finish the game with a 14-3 run and seal the victory.
The afternoon’s final game took place between the top two teams and BBL Championship winners Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders were the victors, beating Newcastle Eagles 86-75 to ensure that they end the season unbeaten at home in championship games.
Eagles were still in the game late in the third quarter before Drew Sullivan scored 8 points, including 2 3-point efforts, in an 11-0 run by Riders that saw them finish the quarter ahead 72-57.
Riders were led by Drew Sullivan with 19 points and 10 rebounds, supported by Jay Couisnard’s 18 points and 5 rebounds and Jamell Anderson’s 14 points and 6 rebounds. Eagles’ Darius Defoe led all scorers with 32 points, making 63% of his shots, in addition to 9 rebounds.
He was assisted by Fab Flournoy’s 10 points and 9 assists as well as Joel Madourie’s 11 boards and 8 points.
