Sharpshooter Johnson Joins Giants
- Comments: None
The British-Canadian will be another familiar face to BBL fans having played for both Leicester Riders and Newcastle Eagles during the last three seasons.
Harvard graduate, Johnson, joined Riders in January 2020 from Spanish LEB Silver side Zornotza Saskibaloi Taldea where he was averaging 10.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in 27 minutes of play.
Johnson comes from a winning background at Harvard, where as a senior his team topped the Ivy League with a 19-12 record averaging 7.2 points per game in college alongside 2.4 rebounds a game.
Macaulay is looking forward to coaching Johnson as the Giants continue to snap up some of the best talent in the BBL: “Corey is still growing as a basketball player which is funny considering how many games he has won on the buzzer for his teams” he said.
“He will help us stretch the floor with his shooting, which is top draw, whilst his experience will be an asset. He can do a little of everything in the backcourt to make us even more versatile.”
While Covid-19 cut short Johnson’s debut season in the UK, he averaged 12.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game over 10 games and remained with the Riders for the following campaign as his 10.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and two assists per game helped the midlands side win the BBL regular season title.
Last season saw Johnson move to Newcastle Eagles where, despite a disappointing campaign for the north-east side, he upped his averages to 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game. During his three-year BBL career, Johnson has averaged 37.7 percent from outside the three-point arc.
Johnson added; “I am extremely grateful to be joining the Giants. Playing basketball in a beautiful city with even better fans is very exciting and I can’t wait to get the season underway!”
Further player news is expected imminently whilst tickets and further details around our games will come out nearer the season start.
