Cheshire Roar was founded in 2020 by Ludovica Lunigiani to help grow and develop girls and women’s basketball in the Cheshire area. The Phoenix have close links with the Women’s basketball game with GB Star Johanna Leedham coming through the junior club ranks, sister Jennifer Leedham who is an associate head coach in the American college system, as well as a list of junior England internationals over the years.
The Roar will join the Phoenix’s ever growing community programme to encourage young girls to play basketball recreationally and competitively.

“I am absolutely thrilled to hear about the partnership between Roar and Phoenix. After being no girls or women’s team for so long, this is absolutely amazing news. This club and town have a special place in my heart as it was where I learnt to play the game, so the fact that other young girls and women will have this opportunity makes me extremely happy
The Phoenix has been the symbol of basketball in Cheshire for many years and has helped raised great players both women and men so for the Roar being in partnership with such a well-established club it’s an honour and it will make a crucial difference for us since one of our main objective as a women’s club is to create a safer community for young girls and women, this will really help us get our name out there and reach as many women as we can.”
Ludovica Lunigiani, Cheshire Roar.
“I am ecstatic at this partnership as both of our clubs have the same goal, which is to develop women’s basketball in Cheshire and we are helping each other do exactly that.
I cannot wait to see how this partnership will flourish and the extent that women and the wider community will benefit from it.”
James Brice, Cheshire Phoenix General Manager
“We delighted that we have been able to join forces with Cheshire Roar to bring back women’s basketball to Cheshire. The club have deep roots with the women’s game over the years and it has been the missing piece in our community delivery for some time. We can’t wait to inspire the next Johanna Leedham”
