All Time BBL Players – L
For some years now I have been contemplating the possibility of publishing a master list of past and present BBL players. I fully realize that this list will never be complete and names will be added as I am made aware of them. The fact that someone’s name isn’t as yet on the list does not mean that they are less important than anyone else. This always will be a work in progress. If you know of players I am missing, and there are thousands, then please drop me your list by e-mail, including the teams played for. I will be delighted to include them.

Hi Mike, hope this finds you well. You won’t remember me but boy do I remember your voice and you. I was John Lavery’s girlfriend for five years at Cheshire Jets and Manchester Giants. Great years and great teams! I was just intersested to know what happened to everyone. Basketball is bigger than ever in the uk and that’s brilliant. Was good to be part of those years. Would love any updates on old friends. Thanks Julie.

Hi Mike,
One of the best English players I ever saw play was Martin Walters of Ovaltine in the early 1980’s. Larry Dassie once said to me he was one of the most talented English players he ever played with. He played on all the top teams in Hemel & Watford/Ovaltine days and started as the off Guard to Dave Shelley. Both Larry and Martin have now passed, but I still remember those days with rose coloured glasses.

As a kid growing up in the 80’s I think some of the best players I saw were Alton Byrd, amazing ball carrier and controlled a game like Andrea Pirlo, Pete Jeremich, a classic shooting style, Art Wearen, fantastic shooter from all over the offensive zone for such a big centre.
As a junior player at Cardiff Central we used to have a Crystal Palace coaching clinic every summer and to watch their players up close was a great honour.
Their centre Mike Spade told me to ‘always wear two pairs of socks and lace your boots up real tight’ I still do it to this day.
Great days
