Loughborough Riders WIN 2014 - 1

The WBBL will raise its curtain for the very first time with five WBBL league games taking place at Loughborough University Campus across Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 October.

It promises to be a real treat for ball fans as Team Northumbria and Cardiff Met Archers lock horns on Saturday, along with hometown favourites Leicester Riders who will match-up against Brixton Topcats.

These games will also be followed by a BBL game between Leicester Riders and visiting Surrey United.

After a stunning Saturday, the action spills over into what is set to be a super Sunday, as City of Sheffield Hatters clash with Barking Abbey, Nottingham Wildcats tussle with Leeds Carnegie and Sevenoaks Suns do battle with Manchester Mystics.

The 2014-15 fixture format will also see the introduction of a new competition, the WBBL Trophy, which will culminate with the final of the competition at the National Indoor Arena, Birmingham on Sunday 11th January 2015.

“I am sure that existing fans of women’s basketball will relish the chance to see every one of the new WBBL clubs open the season with what I expect will be a landmark and memorable occasion,” said WBBL Chief Operating Officer, Andy Webb.

“I also think it’s the ideal opportunity for new fans to come along and see what the buzz surrounding the WBBL is all about.

“It seems like a perfect way to ensure an exciting start to the new league and it is noticeable just how popular these arrangements can be.

“We know that on the Continent and in countries such as France for example where women’s basketball remains very popular, they tend to play games in a central venue at the start of the season.

“It’s a model we are keen to follow and above anything else, showcasing the teams and providing great value for the supporters is what we want to achieve.”

Hatters FAIL 2014 - 1

He continued, “Having the chance to see Leicester Riders play Surrey United is an added bonus for fans of the game and this underlines our intention to develop synergy between the leagues.

“However we also recognise the full value which the WBBL has in its own right and everyone involved is hugely excited not only for this special opening weekend, but the whole of this maiden 2014-15 season.”
