The programme is a pilot to test a range of ways of engaging young boys and girls, particularly in the key 16 to 19 years old age range.

BBL Foundation Chairman Stephen Moseley, MP said, “We are absolutely delighted with this recognition of the capability of the BBL Foundation and its clubs, by Sport England. We believe this provides the Foundation with an outstanding opportunity to really make a difference to understanding what young people want from their sport, and look forward to working with our Clubs in delivering this highly innovative project.”

Sport England’s Director of Sport, Phil Smith, said: “This investment will open up more opportunities for young people to get involved in this great sport and build on the momentum created by the inspiring summer of Olympic and Paralympic sport.

“We know many young people are interested in playing basketball and this partnership will help us understand more about the best ways to turn interest into participation and then keep them coming back week after week.”

The BBL Foundation COO, Gary Atyes, will manage the national Project on behalf of the Foundation, and said, “This is a tremendously innovative and exciting programme, and I am really looking forward to working with our Clubs and Sport England in meeting the project’s objectives. This project is focussed on motivating young people to play sport, which is very much the focus of the Foundation, building on the positive momentum that Basketball has gained from the London Olympic Games.”

“I look forward to utilizing the resources in the BBL clubs with their already impressive community programmes, to deliver this programme and to engage a broad range of strategic partners for the project.”
